I have got a letter today from the rheumatology dept . Its asking if i would like to take part in a trial to try and find out if statins will help people with ra to prevent heart attacks and strokes. The drug is called Atorvastatin .Some will have a placebo others will have the drug. I wont know which one i will be on. The study will go for five or six years. Has anyone else been asked to do this? . I know they are looking for 4000 patients to take part. Kathleen Mc.

Yes, I was asked about this about 18 months ago, by my specialist nurse. I intended discussing it with my GP, but then learned there would be extra blood tests involved, on top of my normal monitoring. Since the medics always have great difficulty in getting my blood, I declined to go on the trial. Kathleen x

Hi Kathleen,
yes I was asked, got all the information, was undecided whether to take part or not and then learned that I couldn't in fact take part as I was already currently involved in another study (relating to joint replacements).

Hi, I wasn't asked and I would not be interested anyway, I think we take enough medicines for RA without any more added on. Lorna x

I am having second thoughts now. I was going to take part in the trial buti have been reading in the Daily Mail today about the many side effects of statins. Things like memory loss depression kidney failure and quite a few other things. I have enough problems as it is ,plus it would mean more medication and blood tests etc. I will sleep on it and decide tomoorow. Kathleen Mc.
